Dear Friends,
As we age, we evolve.
Four of our community members are featured in this annual report, Mimie, Kathleen, Betty, and Ruth. JAA
serves each in unique ways based on her individual needs. We share stories about these amazing women to
demonstrate how aging means something different to each of them.
Just as we develop as people, so too has our organization grown over the last 113 years. Today we are in a new
stage of our existence with JAA’s evolution significantly impacted during the past year.
After the events of October 27, 2018, we came together as a larger community and within our own JAA family.
Together, we proved that our community is most certainly “Stronger Than Hate.”
Among the many ways we responded in the days following the Tree of Life Synagogue tragedy, we held vigils
at our residences to express our feelings and pray together, had professional counselors on site for residents,
clients, families, and staff to deal with their personal grief, and escorted residents to Tree of Life to lay flowers
and pay respects.
To ensure our residents’ safety would remain a priority, we made steps toward significantly increasing security,
including hiring an experienced security manager. He has thoroughly revamped old procedures in all of our
facilities and instituted many new protections, including an electronic sign-in process at the entrances to our
buildings.
With new and unique challenges come new ways of doing business. Changes in our community and business
environment have necessitated that we make decisive moves in new directions. For example, trends in our
industry show that, as people age, they want to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible.
AARP surveys show 90% of seniors over 65 wish to age in place.
Our response to this new reality? A commitment to independent living through our affiliation with The New
Riverview Apartments on JAA’s campus. This 191-apartment complex is undergoing a tax-credit funded,
multi-million dollar renovation. JAA’s commitment to its residents’ well-being is tantamount to its success.
JAA has proven that, despite facing a number of challenges in 2018-19, we remained steadfast in our desire
to put the needs of seniors first.
We continue to look at ways to improve our services and adjust to changes as they occur. JAA has been around
for a long time. We intend to be here for a long time to come, evolving just like our seniors.
Sincerely,
Deborah Winn-Horvitz, President & CEO Andrew Stewart, Chair, Board of Directors
