March: National Nutrition Month

A well-balanced, healthy diet gives your body the energy and nutrients it needs to support your well-being. Some health conditions, like diabetes, require patients to adjust their diets and eating habits to control the effects of their disease.

The diabetes plate method is a simple, visual way to help you create healthy meals that limit the amount of high-carbohydrate foods that have a significant impact on blood sugar.

Start with a dinner plate that is 9 inches across (about the length of a business envelope):

Nonstarchy vegetables- ½ of your plate

  • Salad, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and carrots.

Lean protein- ¼ of your plate

  • Chicken, turkey, beans, tofu, or eggs

Nutrient-dense carbohydrate foods- ¼ of your plate

  • Brown rice, barley, or whole grain pasta

Choose water or a low-calorie drink such as unsweetened iced tea to go with your meal.

If you have a diabetes diagnosis, JAA Home Healthcare can help you with your nursing and nutritional needs. Please ask your physician to order a referral to JAA Home Healthcare.

TIP: STOP DRINKING YOUR CALORIES. CUTTING OUT ONE SUGAR-SWEETENED DRINK CAN SAVE YOU 100 OR MORE CALORIES A DAY. OVER ONE YEAR THAT CAN TRANSLATE INTO A 10-POUND WEIGHT LOSS!
